Abstract

A soldering flux for use in soldering metals such as aluminium and aluminium alloys, copper and copper alloys, or in joining dissimilar metals such as aluminium to copper, brass, iron, or steel, contains as essential ingredients stannous bromide and cadmium chloride. Other salts such as cadmium iodide, ammonium chloride, fluorides such as ammonium fluoride, and zinc chloride or zinc bromide or a mixture of the chloride and bromide may be added. The preferred proportions of the various salts and several specific examples of fluxes are given. The soldering of connections to aluminium cable by dipping the cable first in the flux mixture and then in molten solder is referred to. The fluxes may be mixed with a vehicle, which may be one of the vehicles described in Specification 413,519, for example a mixture of chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated naphthalene, and paradichlorbenzene.
