Abstract

A method for refining Al-Si alloys comprises introducing into the melt at least one sodium salt (e.g. a sodium salt of an oxygen acid of a non-metal of the third to sixth main Group of the Periodic Table) and finely divided calcium or a calcium alloy (e.g. CaSi). Halides of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals may also be added and the refining agents are preferably introduced into the melt in the form of a cast or pressed body by means of a plunger.
