Abstract
A method of treating molten ferrous metals in the production of ingots comprises locating in the bottom of an ingot mould a quantity of flux contained in a mild steel container, charging the ingot mould with the molten metal thereby melting the container and the flux within it and to allow the flux to be distributed in the molten ferrous metal. Fluxes which are particularly suitable are, for example, cryolites, calcium, magnesium and sodium silico-fluorides. The container is made from mild steel sheet of 0.004" to 0.01" thick and is folded to envelope the flux material. Within the container there may also be included a diluting material such sodium carbonate and/or other conditioning agents e.g. deoxidants. The flux should preferably not consist of more than two active agents. Specific examples are given in the Specification.
