Abstract
Silicon-containing aluminium alloys are improved by first adding to the alloy melt sodium or a conventional alkali metal halide mixture, and then adding a consolidated mixture, e.g. tabletted or fused, of alkali metal halides containing NaF and having a melting point 100-150 DEG C. above the temperature of the melt whereby sodium is liberated and diffused into the melt so maintaining the improved condition. Preferably the consolidated mixture contains at least 60% fluoride. An example of a tabletted mixture consists of 75% NaF, 12.5% KF and 12.5% NaCl.
