Abstract
891,369. Aluminium by fusion electrolysis. SLATIN, H. L. Dec. 22, 1959, No. 43461/59. Class 41. In the preparation of aluminium by fusion electrolysis, the cathode consists of a molten aluminium alloy 19 resting at the bottom of a cell with a molten supernatant electrolyte 21, consisting of A.M. or A.E.M. halides, in which AlCl3 is introduced through an inlet 18 below the surface of the aluminium alloy cathode, and the aluminium metal thus formed is dissolved or dispersed in the alloy. In a second stage the aluminium alloy in a compartment formed by a graphite baffle 14, covered by an insulator 16, forms the anode in a second cell, the electrolyte 27 containing AlF3, and a supernatant layer of liquid pure aluminium 29, acting as cathode. The AlCl3 is admitted to the first cell that it is wholly absorbed and decomposed in the molten cathode, and if required is pre-mixed with an inert gas. The preferred electrolyte contains fluoride and may be NaCl, KCl; NaCl, NaF, NaCl, CaCl2; where necessary with 10 to 25% of NaF, KF, or CaF2 added to form a eutectic mixture. The liquid aluminium alloy may contain Pb, Sb, Cd, Ag, Cu, Sn, Zn, Si and Ge. The electrolyte in the second cell is preferably a mixture of chlorides and fluorides, e.g. BaF2, LiF, AlCl3, CaF2, and some Al2O3 may be added. Aluminium of high purity is produced, and continuously flows over an outlet wier 33.
