Abstract
Silicon or germanium is refined by cathodic deposition using a fused salt electrolyte containing a fluoride and an anode of the impure metal or an alloy thereof with a nobler metal. The electrolyte may consist of one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal fluorides or cryolites with optionally aluminium fluoride or up to 10% by weight of an oxide of the metal to be refined, or of one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorides together with one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal fluorides or fluosilicates. The anode may be solid and dip into the melt which is kept below the anode melting point, the refined metal being deposited on the carbon or graphite crucible walls which serve as the cathode and also dispersed in the melt or it may be molten, either as impure Ge or as a Si or Ge alloy, typically of Cu, on the bottom of the crucible covered by the fused salt into which dips a cathode of carbon or graphite.
