Abstract
Silicon or germanium is purified by passing D.C. between an anode in contact with a fused salt bath containing an oxide of the metal to be purified and a fluoride and a cathode in contact with another fused salt bath containing a fluoride, the baths being separated by a molten alloy of the metal being purified and a nobler metal, whereby the oxide is reduced to metal and deposited in the alloy and metal from the alloy is deposited in a purified state on the cathode. The catholyte may be (1) an alkali metal cryolite or a mixture of such cryolites with or without an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal fluoride or a mixture of such fluorides; (2) one or more alkali or alkaline earth metal fluorides; (3) one or more alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorides with one or more alkali or alkaline earth metal fluorides or fluosilicates; while the anolyte may be as in (1) and (2) above together with an oxide of the metal being refined. For silicon refining at a bath temperature of 1000 DEG C. the catholyte also may contain silica and the molten alloy intermediate electrode is a copper-silicon alloy containing 16% silicon by weight. For germanium refining at a bath temperature of 930 DEG C. the alloy used is a silver-germanium or copper-germanium alloy containing up to 50% germanium by weight. The cell used is divided by a wall which dips into the molten alloy intermediate electrode and rotatably supports a stirrer which rotates in the alloy about an axis arranged vertically within the wall.
