Abstract
648,337. Electrolytic production of aluminium. AKTIESELSKAPET ARDAL VERK. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 3.5256. Convention date, Dec. 23, 1946. [Class 41] In the production of aluminium by a fused electrolyte process less than 50 per cent of the electrolyte consists of a melt similar to that normally used and comprising sodium fluoride and aluminium fluoride in the proportion of about three mols. sodium fluoride to one mol. aluminium fluoride with aluminium oxide dissolved in quantities ranging from 1 to 20 per cent while the remainder of the electrolyte consists of constituents within the following group : mixtures of alkali-metal chlorides ; alkali-metal carbonates ; alkali-metal carbonates combined with alkali-metal fluorides ; mixtures of alkali-metal fluoride and aluminium chloride ; and aluminium fluoride ; whereby a melt bath is obtained which melts at a temperature of 700‹ C. or less.
