Abstract

555,734. Magnesium. chloride. BURRAGE, L. J., MEAD; A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 2, 1942, Nos. 2706, 2707 and 7103. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Anhydrous magnesium chloride compositions for the electrolytic production of the metal are obtained by heating finely divided tachydrite or mixtures thereof with calcium chloride or alkali metal chlorides in an atmosphere which may contain 1 to 2 per cent. of HCl and at a temperature at which water is driven off but at which fusion does not occur. The early stages of the heating, which may be carried out in a rotary boiler in a current of hot air are conducted at 140-160‹C. and the final stage at not exceeding 200‹C. The material may be obtained by heating a fused low-melting mixture of hydrated Mg and Ca chlorides until it solidifies and pulverising it, an alkali metal chloride being added if desired before dehydration. Fused salt impoverished in Mg may be withdrawn continuously from the electrolytic bath, mixed with a concentrated MgC1 2 solution or with the hydrated chloride, dehydrated as above, and returned to the bath.
