Abstract
Stable calcium salts of phenylalkyl-barbituric acids are prepared by treating the corresponding alkali metal salts in the solid state with crystallized (i.e. hydrated) calcium bromide and mixing the product with wholly or partially dehydrated calcium bromide. If desired, the crystallized and dehydrated calcium bromide may be added at the same time, whilst other anhydrous bromides, such as potassium, magnesium or strontium bromide, may also be added. The products are useful as sedatives and soporifics. According to the examples; (1) sodium phenylethyl-barbiturate is triturated whilst warming with calcium bromide tetrahydrate, carbon dioxide of the air being excluded; the product is mixed with dehydrated calcium bromide; (2) sodium phenylallyl - barbiturate is treated with crystallized calcium bromide and the product mixed with dehydrated calcium bromide and potassium bromide. The sample furnished under Sect. 2 (5) is prepared by grinding sodium phenylethyl-barbiturate with calcium bromide hexahydrate and mixing with dehydrated calcium bromide and dehydrated strontium bromide.ALSO:In the preparation of calcium salts of phenyl-alkyl-barbituric acids from the alkali metal salts and hydrated calcium bromide, the product is stabilized by admixture with wholly or partially dehydrated calcium bromide or by using a mixture of the hydrated and dehydrated calcium bromide for the preparation. Other anhydrous bromides, such as potassium, magnesium or strontium bromide, may also be added. The products are useful as sedatives and soporifics. According to the examples: (1) sodium p phenylethyl-barbiturate is triturated with calcium bromide tetrahydrate and the product mixed with dehydrated calcium bromide; (2) sodium phenylallyl-barbiturate is treated with crystallized calcium bromide and mixed with dehydrated calcium bromide and potassium bromide. The sample furnished under Sect. 2 (5) is prepared by grinding sodium phenylethyl-barbiturate with calcium bromide hexahydrate and mixing with dehydrated calcium bromide and dehydrated strontium bromide.
