Abstract
Hydrated sodium metaborate having at least 4 molecules of water of crystallization is prepared by mixing sodium biborate (borax) with sodium hydroxide in a molar ratio of 1 to 2 in the presence of water in an amount equal to that taken up by the desired hydrate, and agitating the mixture to obtain a granular hydrated metaborate. The quantity of water employed includes water added as such, formed is situ or present as water of crystallization. Equations illustrate the employment of sodium biborate penta- and deca-hydrate to obtain sodium metaborate tetra- and octa-hydrate. The caustic soda may be employed as a concentrated solution or as a solid. The reaction is preferably effected at 70 to 80 DEG F. Sodium chlorate may be incorporated during the reaction and preferably at a point before all the water is combined as water of crystallization, whereby a co-crystallized mixture of sodium metaborate hydrate and sodium chlorate is obtained which is suitable as a herbicide, and is non-inflamable. The amount of chlorate incorporated may be from 25 to 60 per cent of the mixture.ALSO:A non-inflammable herbicide consists of a co-crystallized granular solid composition of sodium metaborate octa- or tetrahydrate and sodium chlorate (see Group III). The chlorate may be present in amounts from 25 to 60 per cent.
