Abstract

Beryllium is produced by heating beryllium flouride with a mixture of calcium and magnesium, in which the calcium constitutes 20-80 per cent. of the mixture, and then raising the temperature above the melting point of beryllium and forming a slag of calcium and magnesium fluorides. The slag formed has a melting point below that of either of the constituent fluorides. The calcium and magnesium may be used as an alloy and the preferred proportions of these metals however used are 48-68 per cent. of calcium and 52-32 per cent. of magnesium. The process may be carried out by adding calcium and magnesium mixture and beryllium fluoride in alternate layers to a heated crucible and, when the reaction is completed, increasing the temperature to above the melting point of beryllium.
