Abstract

A process for the production of magnesium base alloys comprises introducing manganese, at least 90 per cent of which is of a size between minus 4 mesh and plus 150 mesh (Tyler Standard screen), into aluminium-free molten magnesium at a temperature of 750 DEG C.-800 DEG C. It is preferred to use electrolytically-produced manganese of high purity and it is preferably added while the molten magnesium is free from any chloride containing flux. If aluminium is desired in the alloys it may be added after the addition of manganese. The manganese may be added in admixture with a commercial magnesium-refining flux, the metal exceeding 50 per cent of the mixture. Such a flux, having a chloride base, may contain 20-40 per cent of inspissants such as magnesia and fluoride, e.g. magnesia and calcium fluoride. The production of magnesium-manganese alloys which may contain aluminium and/or zinc is referred to.
