Abstract
Magnesium is produced by reducing with calcium carbide a mixture of a magnesium halide with a halide of potassium or sodium or both. Preferably the starting material is a chlorine compound of the metals such as carnallite (usually associated with sodium chloride) and the magnesium, sodium, and potassium are separated by distillation, sodium or potassium chlorides or both being added if it is desired to produce a sodium-potassium alloy liquid at room temperatures. The reaction may be carried out in a retort, as described in Specification 444,957, heated in an electric furnace, and, if desired, under reduced pressure.
