Abstract
548,880. Refining magnesium and its alloys. MAGNESIUM METAL CORPORATION, Ltd. (American Magnesium Metals Corporation). April 25, 1941, No. 5378. [Class 82 (i)] Magnesium and its alloys are purified by means of a flux consisting mainly of magnesium chloride or of a mixture thereof with carnallite or potassium chloride, having a melting point not above that of carnallite, together with a small proportion of a volatile material comprising at least one compound, which may be iron or zinc chloride, a fluosilicate or fluoboride, or neutral or acid ammonium fluoride, which is volatile at the melting point of the metal with the liberation of gases which carry the generated dross to the top of the melt. A compound such as calcium chloride may be added to lower the viscosity and melting point /of the mixture. These may also be added organic substances such as asphalt, casein, horn meal, or sugar which burn with the formation of an inert crust.
