Abstract

555,412. Magnesium; alloys. MAGNESIUM BLEKTRON, Ltd., SIMCOX, H. J., FISHER, P. A., and HIRST, S. B. Feb. 13, 1942, No. 1958. [Class 82 (i)] A process for recovering finely divided magnesium and magnesium alloys in compact form comprises briquetting the metal with a flux and treating the briquettes in a molten bath at a temperature above the melting point of magnesium. The molten bath may be a mixture of salts, for example carnallite or its constituents or it may be a metal such as magnesium or aluminium' or their alloys. The flux mixed with the finely divided scrap may be a mixture of magnesium and other chlorides such as that described in Specification 539,023. The briquettes may be added to the molten bath when this is at a temperature of 720-780‹C the temperature being thereafter raised to 800-900‹C, fluorspar added, and an inspissated flux, which may be of the type described in Specification 539,024 being sprinkled on the surface of the molten metal to protect it from oxidation, and the bath being stirred.
