Abstract
553,809. Aluminium ; alloys. INTERNATIONAL ALLOYS, Ltd., and PRYTHERCH., W. E. Feb. 3, 1942, Nos. 1410 and 15802. [Class 82 (i)] Aluminium or aluminium alloy scrap is refined by forming a melt of the material with magnesium whereupon an alloy of aluminium and magnesium having a solidification point below that of aluminium is formed, separating such alloy from the remainder, and distilling off therefrom the magnesium and condensing it for reuse. One or more alkaline earth or rare earth metals, e.g. calcium and cerium may be introduced into the melt to act as cleansing agents. The quantity of magnesium added may be about equal to that of the metal to be refined. The remainder left after separating the aluminium-magnesium alloy may be used as a reducing-agent in the extraction of magnesium from magnesium compounds. The treatment of aluminium alloy scrap containing specified proportions of copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, silicon, and titanium, and also of commercial aluminium of 99.5 per cent. purity, is referred to. Specification 557,553 is referred to.
