Abstract

Non-ferrous metals, particularly aluminium and its alloys, for example those containing copper or silicon, are refined by addition to the metal prior to melting or in its molten state of a flux consisting of a potassium compound, preferably the ferrocyanide, ferricyanide, or cyanamide, a caustic alkali, a chloride, and a fluoride. Examples of fluxes are mixtures of potassium ferrocyanide, potassium hydrate, calcium fluoride, and sodium chloride with or without sodium aluminium fluoride. The flux may be placed in a container of the same metal as the metal to be refined and the container introduced into the refining crucible and maintained therein at as low a level as is practicable. It is stated that the fluoride in the flux may be obtained by the use of commercial iceland spar. The Provisional Specifications describe a flux consisting of potassium cyanide, sodium aluminium fluoride, calcium fluoride and sodium chloride.
