Abstract
523,303. Refining metals; alloys. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Dec. 30, 1938, No. 37860. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 82 (i)] Aluminium occurring as an impurity in tin or tin-containing alloys such as tin-lead alloys is removed by treating the molten metal or alloy with molten alkali carbonate with or without the addition of a non-fuming melting-point depressant which may be an alkali chloride. The carbonate and chloride may be present in eutectic proportions. An alkali hydroxide may also be present, preferably not exceeding 15 per cent. of the mixture. A mixture consisting of specified proportions of sodium carbonate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and caustic soda is described.
