Alloys. - The structure of aluminium alloys containing 3-15 per cent of silicon is modified or physically varied without the use of fluorides or alkali me,tals by the addition to the molten alloy of an agent which may be alkaline-earth metal, caustic soda, alkali or alkaline-earth peroxide, sodamide, antimony, or magnesium. For example 0.1 per cent of calcium may be used, preferably in a wrapping of aluminium foil; or alikaline-earth metals may be used in the form of alloys such as 2 per cent of calcium and 98 per cent of aluminium.
