Abstract

557,530. Cleaning metals; extracting metals; hydrides; hydrogen; alcoholates. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. May 20, 1942, No. 6836. Convention date, April 23, 1941. [Classes 82(i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups III and IV] A composition to be used in a molten condition for cleaning metals and for other purposes comprises alkali metal hydroxide and alkali metal hydride preferably sodium hydroxide containing 1-20 per cent. of sodium hydride. The composition may be made by floating molten sodium or fused caustic soda and passing in hydrogen, the sodium being protected from oxidation, if desired, by a non-oxidizing atmosphere, or by reacting hydrogen with a fused mixture.of alkali metal hydroxide and oxide ; or preformed hydride may be dissolved in fused hydroxide. Diluents such as halides or carbonates, for example, sodium iodide, may also be present. The compositions may be used at 320-600‹C. for cleaning metals and the treated articles may be quenched in water. The compositions may also be used as reducing agents in chemical reactions, for example, for reducing metal oxides or forming alcoholates ; also they may be used in contact with water to generate hydrogen.
