1356038 Glass manufacture KOMBINAT LAUSITZER GLAS VEB 6 Aug 1971 37142/71 Heading C1M In order to manufacture a glass, e.g. an alumino-silicate glass containing at least one alkali metal oxide and at least one alkaline earth metal oxide, a glass-making batch containing alkaline earth metal oxide is treated prior to melting with water, preferably as steam, and the resulting alkaline earth metal hydroxide, e.g. Ca(OH) 2 , reacted with the carbonate of an alkali metal, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 , to yield the corresponding alkali metal hydroxide. The reaction may be initiated or carried out during mixing of the batch ingredients, and may be performed on a part only of the batch. An example details the preparation of a glass of composition SiO 2 74; Al 2 O 3 1; CaO 10; Na 2 O 15% by wt.
