Abstract
1,254,260. Opalizable glass compositions. OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc. 24 Feb., 1969, No. 11231/71. Divided out of 1,253,729. Heading C1M. A thermally opalizable glass composition comprises (in weight per cent): SiO 2 55-76 ; Al 2 O 3 1À5-12 ; B 2 O 3 0-14 ; CaO 4À7-20 ; MgO 0-15 ; Na 2 O 1-11 ; K 2 O 0-5 ; Li 2 O 0-2 ; where (CaO+MgO) is 8-30 ; (Na 2 O+ K 2 O) is 1-11 ; (SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 + B 2 O 3 + CaO + MgO + Na 2 O + K 2 O) > 95. The glasses formed may be subjected to an in situ phase separation to effect the opalization. This may be effected by heating the article at 600-980‹ C. for 15 minutes to 64 hours, but with certain of the above compositions the opalization may occur during the formation of the glass article. 0-2% of colorant oxides of Co, Cr, Cu, Ni or Mn may be present. The glass may be used in tumblers, rods or plates. The glass may become completely opaque. The invention claimed in Specification 1,253,729 is disclaimed.
