Abstract
1,246,384. Ion exchange in boroaluminium silicate glass. CARL - ZEISS - STIFTUNG, [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN.]. 28 Jan., 1969 [1 Feb., 1968], No. 4724/69. Heading C1M. A glass article having a composition comprising (in weight per cent) SiO 2 58-81; B 2 O 3 11-22À5; Al 2 O 3 6-24; Alkaline Earth Metal Oxide(s) 0-8; Alkali Metal Oxide(s), at least 2, the balance, if any, being compatible constituents ; and whose linear expansion coefficient is below 60 x 10<SP>-7</SP> deg. C.<SP>-1</SP>, is strengthened by subjection to a known alkali metal ion exchange process. (Several conventional processes are referred to.) Preferably small ions in the glass are replaced by larger ions at below the strain point (e.g. Li replaced by Na). A typical exchange procedure is for 1 hour at 440-450‹ C., using a conventional molten salt bath.
