Abstract
Photochromatic colour glass compn. for spectacles, colour filters, glass surfaces for buildings and for jewellery, consists of melt of Ag halide-contg. borosilicate or borate glass which contains 0.0015-0.05 wt.% total added V, Cr, Mn and/or Co in an electropositive valency state, where total concn. of Cr and Co is not >0.2 wt.%. Pref. basic borosilicate glass consists of 40-55% SiO2, 18-30% B2O3, 10-20% M2O (where M is Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), 0-10% ZnO, 0-15% Al2O3, 0-3% Ga2O3, 0-6% ZrO2, 0.01-0.02% CuO, 0-3-0.8% Ag, 0.3-2% Cl and 0-0.02% Ti (All % by weight and pref. basic borate glass consists at 60-80% B2O3, 8-15% M2O (where M is Na, K, Pb, Cs), 5-12% Al2O3, 5-12% Bi2O3, 0-6% ZrO2, 0-3-1% Ag, 0.6-2.5% Cl, 0.01-0.02 % CuO and 0-0.02% Ti. Pref. Cl is partly replaced by Br and/or I to =1 weight %. Pref. melt further contains 0.01-0.1% S or Se or 0.001-0.01% Te, for achieving further glass-colour variations.
