1,129,837. Glass manufacture. OWENS ILLINOIS Inc. 5 Jan., 1966, No. 402/66. Heading C1M. A batch for making a glass having a theoretical composition within the range SiO 2 60- 75%, Al 2 O 3 0À1-10À0%, CaO 6-14%, BaO 0-1À0%, B 2 O 3 0-5%, MgO O-8%, Na 2 O 10- 20%, K 2 O 0-3%, all percentages being by weight, is characterized by a part only of the defined alkali oxide content being supplied as an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The aqueous sodium hydroxide may be used in an amount so as to supply at least 15 1b. (preferably 20 to 200 1b.) of NaOH per ton of sand while additional water may be added in an amount of from 40 to 160 1b. per ton of sand. The sodium hydroxide solution may have a concentration of from 25 to 70%, e.g. 50%. For coloured glasses, oxides of Cu, Co or Fe or sodium dichromate may be added.
