Abstract
1,177,248. Glass compositions; strengthening glassware. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 March, 1967 [10 March, 1966], No. 10591/67. Heading C1M. Strengthened glassware is formed from a glass composition consisting essentially in percentages by weight of SiO2 50-70; MgO 2-7; Al2O3 10-25; Na2O 10-20; Li2O<1 and the formed, untempered article is contacted with a melt of a salt or salt mixture containing an alkali metal having an ionic radius greater than that of sodium to replace the sodium within a surface layer with such alkali metal, the temperature of the melt being more than 75‹ C. lower than the strain point of the glass. Examples of glasses are given and the molten salt used was KNO3.
