Abstract

Boron or borides are produced by aluminothermic reduction in a reaction charge containing an oxygen-containing boron compound, an oxygen-containing metal compound where a boride is to be produced, aluminium, and a scorifying agent which, in the quantity employed, is capable of combining with alumina and boric anhydride to form a complex slag readily soluble in mineral acid and/or caustic alkali. The scorifying agents referred to are the oxides of alkali metals and alkali earth metals and compounds derived from them such as the tungstates, molybdates and vanadates. The invention may also be applied in partially removing oxygen from oxygen-containing boron compounds to obtain products containing 75 per cent or more of boron. The aluminium used for reduction may be replaced by an aluminium alloy such as calcium-aluminium, magnesium - aluminium or silicon - aluminium. <PICT:0794146/III/1> The amount of scorifying agent to be used may be determined from ternary diagrams of the slag components showing the areas of soluble slags, an example of which for the system B2O3:CaO:Al2O3, is shown on the Figure, the area C,m,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,a,n representing the area of readily soluble slags with the area of preferred compositions shown hatched. The scorifying agent may be added in the form of a borate, e.g. borax or calcium borate.
