Abstract

935,191. Refining metals and alloys. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. May 19, 1960 [June 5, 1959], No. 19361/59. Classes 72 and 82. Molten metals and alloys are treated to remove suspended oxides by causing them to flow through a molten salt mixture which is capable of wetting, coalescing and retaining the oxide particles. Reference is made to the treatment of aluminium, magnesium and their alloys, and iron and steel. Particularly suitable salt mixtures are those containing sodium or potassium chloride and cryolite, a mixture referred to for the treatment of aluminium containing 41% sodium chloride, 53% potassium chloride, and sodium fluoride 6%. The stream of molten metal is broken up by a spreader device such as that shown at 19 in Fig. 1, which may be rotated or reciprocated, and after coming into intimate contact with the salt mixture leaves through pipe 20, a heel of molten metal being retained in vessel 1.
