Abstract
543,431. Aluminium. GENTIL, H. L., and ALLOY PROCESSES Ltd. Aug. 24, 1940, No. 13431. [Class 82 (i)] In a process for refining aluminium of the kind in which the aluminium is recovered from molten metal by distillation and condensation under high vacuum, the condensation is carried out in a chamber the first part of which is maintained at a temperature at or below the condensation temperature of pure aluminium, and a further part is maintained at a lower temperature at or below the condensation temperature of the other vaporizable metals. The condensation chamber may be constructed as described in Specification 543,370. If the original material contains a considerable proportion of metals other than aluminium its composition may be adjusted before distillation to form a eutectic of the metals other than aluminium by adding for example scrap aluminium, copper, zinc, or molybdenum, the mixture being melted and separated by liquation, and the aluminium-rich portion treated by distillation. Ferro-silicon aluminum alloys may be treated with the addition of iron or silicon in combination with the process described in Specification 532,115.
