Abstract

526,085. Refining aluminium; alloys. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES, Ltd. March 8, 1939, No. 7528. Convention date, March 9, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] Degassing of molten aluminium and aluminium alloys in preparation for casting is effected by bubbling therethrough, whilst it is in a protective atmosphere of substantially dry air, a non- oxidizing hydrogen-free gas such as chlorine. The moisture content of the air does not exceed about 1 grain per cubic foot. The application of the process to aluminium alloys containing the following metals is referred to: (a) 10 per cent. of copper, 1 per cent. of iron, and 25 per cent. of magnesium ; (b) 4 per cent. of copper, 2 per cent. of nickel, and 1.5 per cent. of magnesium.
