Abstract

544,560. Treating metals and alloys. BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and BAKER, W. A. Nov. 26, 1940, No. 16947. [Class 82 (i)] Non-ferrous metals and alloys are prepared for casting by bringing the molten metal into equilibrium with an atmosphere consisting of an inert or insoluble gas such as nitrogen or dry air containing a 'small amount, which may be 0.05-10 per cent. of a soluble gas such as hydrogen or water vapour or other gas which forms a soluble gas by reaction. In some cases the melt may first be saturated with the required gas. The gas may be introduced into the molten metal through a pipe dipping below the surface of the metal, the pipe passing through a bell or container of refractory material also dipping into the metal. The treatment of the following alloys is referred to: (a) 90 per cent. of copper and 10 per cent. of zinc; (b) 89.8 per cent. of copper, 10 per cent. of tin, and 0.2 per cent. of phosphorus; (c) 87.5 per cent. of copper, 9.5 per cent. of tin, and 3 per cent. of zinc.
