553,573. Cast iron. MEEHANITE METAL CORPORATION, and SMALLEY O. Nov. 25, 1941, No. 15177. Addition to 510,757. [Class 82 (i)] All-pearlitic cast iron is made by treating a molten charge of cast iron, which on normal casting would not produce an all-pearlitic structure, with adjusted quantities of tellurium, with or without a graphitizing agent such as calcium silicide. The tellurium may be added in combination with an inert substance such as graphite, silica, or clay, and may be introduced in the form of tablets, containing one part of tellurium in 20, made with the aid of a binder; or it may be added as an alloy with iron, copper, silver, copper-silver, aluminium, or alkaline earth metals. The carbon content of the iron treated is preferably 3-3.6 per cent., the silicon 1.2-2.6 per cent., and the total carbon and silicon 4-6.2 per cent. The amount of tellurium added may be 0.5-150 grams per 1001b. of metal, and the product may contain up to 0.2 per cent. of tellurium, 0.1-5 per cent. of one or more of the metals, chromium, nickel, copper, and molybdenum may also be present.
