Abstract
A process for producing spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises treating the molten metal with tellurium and with a nodularising graphitiser in such quantity that the tellurium increases the wedge value to 1/5 to 9/10 of the mean casting section and the nodularising graphitiser reduces this wedge value to 1/10 to 1/2 of the mean casting section, the combined carbon then being in an unstable condition easily broken down by a short anncell to pearlite and/or ferrite. The tellurium may be added as an alloy with iron or copper either by surface or subsurface treatment and the graphitiser may be magnesium-silicon or calcium-silicon or a mixture thereof.
