A process for the production of spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises adding to a cast iron melt 0,2-0,8% yttrium by weight and casting the metal to retain 0,04 to 0,8% yttrium in the casting. The yttrium may be added as the element or as an alloy consisting of 20% Y and 80% Si or 20% Y, 45% Si and 35% Fe. The cast iron produced may contain 2-5% C. 1-5% Si, 0,04 to 0,8% Y and the balance iron and impurities.
