Abstract

A method of reducing the shrinkage porosity and improving the surface quality of lead castings, such as used for radiation shield lead bricks, comprises the addition of arsenic (e.g. in form of a master lead-arsenic alloy) to the lead being cast. In the casting, the arsenic may be present in proportions between 0.6% and 1.4% by weight. The addition of 1% arsenic reduces the ductility, but increases the tensile strength and hardness of the lead.
