Abstract
A method of producing cast iron comprises melting the charge in a reducing atmosphere containing carbon monoxide and one or more ketenes, the amount of the latter being sufficient to establish a pseudo-equilibrium between the ketenes and carbon monoxide in the melting zone of the furnace. The ketene may be carbon suboxide and may be produced by the combustion of a mixture of acetone and benzol, or ketenes may be injected between the air blast nozzles and the melting zone. The metal of the charge may be steel which may be carburized to raise the carbon content and alloying ingredients may be injected with the ketenes or ketene-producing fuel.
