Abstract
Process for the rapid removal of carbon and other residual elements, without the emission of dense, brown, iron oxide, characterized in that it comprises injecting into a molten metal a particulate oxide of a suitable metal in the finished steel, thereby carbon is rapidly removed from the melt by reaction of the carbon with the metal oxide and nitrogen and hydrogen are removed by flooding from the melt, the metal oxide being injected by means of a vehicle gas, the amount of gas used being of the necessary magnitude so that its oxygen content is sufficient to cause the production of brown smoke of iron oxide, and insufficient to effect an excessive cooling of the molten metal.
