Abstract
Spheroidal graphite cast iron is produced by the addition to a bath of cast iron containing not more than 0.05 per cent of sulphur and at least 0.75 per cent of silicon at a temperature not exceeding 1500 DEG C. of 0.28 to 1.5 per cent. of calcium and 0.25 to 1.6 per cent. of zirconium and sufficient silicon to produce a final silicon content of 1.5 to 5 per cent. The additions may be made in the form of a calcium-zirconium-silicon alloy containing 9.5 to 16 per cent calcium, 15 to 20 per cent zirconium, 50 to 65 per cent silicon and the balance iron. The sulphur content may be reduced by blowing calcium carbide and an inert gas into the molten metal through a consumable pipe.
