Abstract

426,573. Refining metals and alloys. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 24, 1933, No. 32924. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1932. [Class 82 (i)] Metals and alloys are refined by liquefying the mass and volatilizing the lower boiling constituent in a vacuum in that range of temperature which is below the turning point above which temperature increases nearly linearly with pressure. The metal or alloy is placed in a cast iron refining kettle 10 and, after melting, a bell 11, provided with inner and outer walls 12, 13, between which are cooling tubes 14, is placed in the kettle. A vacuum is produced in the bell by a suction pump attached to a U-tube 18. A pump 16 forces metal from the body of the bath against a plate 17 to increase volatilization. The metal which evaporates condenses on the walls of the bell and collects in a trough 21. Molten metal or high boiling point oils may fill the space between the walls 12, 13. The interior of the bell may be coated protectively. As examples of separations accomplished by the process arsenic is removed from tin and lead, cadmium, sodium and zinc are removed from lead and sodium and magnesium from tin.
