Abstract
A method of making a master alloy of substantially equal amounts of Mg and Zr comprises reacting a saline flux mixture containing alkali metal chloride and zirconium tetrachloride with an excess of Mg at a temperature between 1300 DEG F. and 1450 DEG F. to produce metallic Zr entrained in the excess Mg as a master alloy, withdrawing at least a portion of the master alloy and mixing it with a saline washing flux of one or both of sodium and potassium chlorides at a temperature at which the flux and alloy are molten. The washing flux absorbs any magnesium chloride contamination from the alloy which is then separated. The washing flux may contain up to 80 per cent. of barium chloride. The resulting master alloy is used for addition to Mg to produce Mg-base alloys containing at least 80 per cent. Mg. p Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 652,222.
