Abstract

Halogenated ketones are produced by reacting an acetylene hydrocarbon such as heptine, phenyl-acetylene or vinyl-acetylene with a carboxylic acid halide in the presence of a condensing agent such as zinc chloride, aluminium chloride, stannic and ferric chlorides and boron fluoride and if desired of a solvent. The products are unstable and may be stabilized by adding an ethylene oxide derivative such as phenoxy-propene oxide. In examples: (1) isobutyl b -chlorvinyl ketone is made from acetylene and isovaleric acid chloride; (2) methyl b - chlorvinyl ketone is made from acetylene and acetyl chloride; (3) phenyl chlorheptenyl ketone is made from benzoyl chloride and heptine; (4) methyl chlorheptenyl ketone is made from acetyl chloride and heptine; (5) heptadecyl chlorvinyl ketone is made from stearic acid chloride and acetylene; and (6) b -chlorethyl-b -chlorvinyl ketone is made from b -chlorpropionic acid chloride and acetylene.
