Abstract

Aliphatic fluorine compounds are prepared by reacting a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon which contains at least one halogen atom, other than fluorine, with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of an antimony compound and metallic aluminium. Suitable catalysts are antimonous halides in the presence of chlorine or antimonic halides. The reaction may be conveniently carried out in an aluminium vessel which is found to accelerate the reaction rate and also to be corroded less easily than steel or copper vessels. The reaction may also be activated by the addition of 0,1 to 10% of an arsenic halide e.g. the trichloride or trifluoride based on the weight of the antimony compound. In examples (1) trifluorodichloroethane and difluorotrichloroethane are prepared from pentachlaroethane (2) (3) tetrafluorodichloroethane and trifluorotrichloroethane are prepared from hexachloroethane, (4) methylene difluoride is prepared from methylene dichloride. (5) 1:1:1-trifluoroethyl chloride is prepared from trichlorethylene The trichlorethylene may be replaced by 1:2-dichlor-ethylene, 2-fluoroheptachloropropane or 1:2:3:4-tretrafluorohexachlorobutane. Specifications 462,969 and 706,598 are referred to.
