Abstract
The removal of hydrogen chloride from chlorinated hydrocarbons containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms is effected by pyrolysis in the presence of a small quantity of chlorine or bromine or a compound yielding them, such as sulphuryl chloride, thionyl chloride or hexachlorethane. Preferably a small quantity of oxygen is also present. Examples describe the dehydrochlorination of ethylene dichloride, tetrachlorethane and propylene dichloride, yielding vinyl chloride, trichlorethylene and monochlorpropene respectively. It is stated that the presence of alcohols, ethylene oxide or hydrocarbons is injurious to the reaction and, if present, these substances may be removed.
