Abstract
1,2-Dichloroethane is obtained by the oxychlorination of excess ethylene with hydrogen chloride and oxygen at elevated temperature and pressure, the dichloroethane being separated from the reactor effluent and the remaining vaporous ethylene-containing effluent being mixed with chlorine and reacted in the presence of active alumina or actinic radiation to give further quantities of dichloroethane. The dichloroethane produced in the addition chlorination reactor may be recycled to the oxychlorination reactor. The hydrogen chloride used in the oxychlorination zone may be obtained by subjecting the chlorine-hydrogen chloride effluent from a perchlorination reactor to an addition chlorination reaction with ethylene to remove chlorine therefrom. Ethyl chloride and 1,1,2- trichloroethane are produced as by-products.
