Abstract
1:2-Dichloroethane is manufactured by subjecting ethylene to reaction with chlorine at an elevated temperature (preferably above 200 DEG C.) while mixed with hydrogen and in the presence of oxygen and a chlorination catalyst. The amount of oxygen is preferably at least 1 per cent by volume of the gases in the reaction zone, and the amount of chlorine advantageously the molar equivalent of the amount of ethylene. The mixture of ethylene and hydrogen may be obtained by the cracking of ethane, and a mixture containing chlorine and oxygen from hydrogen chloride by the Deacon process using excess of air (e.g. sufficient air to provide about 1/3 mol. of oxygen per mol. of hydrogen chloride). The reaction time may be 0.4-0.8 second, the temperature 225-400 DEG C. and the catalyst activated bauxite. Detailed examples are given.
