Abstract
1,2-Dichloroethane is prepared by heating a molar excess of ethylene with hydrogen chloride and an oxygen-containing gas in a first stage and reacting, in a second stage, the off-gas from the first stage with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst consisting of or containing iron. The off-gas is defined as the gas remaining when the unreacted hydrogen chloride and the major proportion of the 1,2-dichloroethane have been removed, e.g. by washing. The first stage is preferably effected at 180-350 DEG C. using a catalyst, e.g. copper chloride, and air as the source of oxygen. In the second stage, the off-gas, containing unreacted ethylene, is mixed with chlorine and preferably passed over the catalyst at 80-250 DEG C. The reaction is illustrated by reference to a schematic drawing (not shown).
