Abstract

1 : 1 : 2-trichloroethane is made by reacting gaseous chlorine with gaseous ethylene at 30 DEG to 200 DEG C., preferably 70 DEG to 150 DEG C, while irradiated with light in the range of 350 to 900 mm in the presence of at least one gaseous chloroethane, the partial pressure of which in the reaction zone prior to reaction is 10 to 50% of the total pressure and preferably in the presence of water in an amount sufficient to absorb the hydrogen chloride formed. The reaction velocity may be regulated by varying the intensity of the radiant flux and may be carried out by dividing the reaction zone into a plurality of sections, each section having a different temperature and each section maintained at that temperature by means of temperature-controlled light sources, each of which is independent from the other light sources. In the examples, the chloroethane added is 1 : 2-dichloroethane and the products include 1 : 1 : 2 : 2-tetrachloroethane.
