Abstract

1,1,2,2 - Tetrafluoro -1,2 - dichloroethane is produced by a process which comprises reacting chlorine and tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of an organic liquid diluent which is substantially unreactive towards the reactants and reaction product while exposing the system to actinic radiation. Carbon tetrachloride may be employed as diluent and a reaction temperature at which the desired product distils is preferred. The process may be carried out continuously by passing tetrafluoroethylene and chlorine into a vessel containing carbon tetrachloride whilst the system is exposed to actinic radiation. An inert gas such as nitrogen may be passed into the free space above the carbon tetrachloride. In an example chlorine and tetrafluoroethylene are passed into carbon tetrachloride under nitrogen in a glass vessel exposed to light from a mercury-vapour lamp emitting light of various wavelengths including those in the range 3600 to 4400 . The product which distils over is collected in a low-temperature trap and fractionated and is mainly 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-1,2-dichlorethane.
