Abstract

Chlorinated straight-chain C8 to C16 paraffins containing at least 90% by weight of monochlorinated paraffins are obtained by introducing the corresponding paraffins into a primary reaction zone together with sufficient gaseous chlorine such that the mixture passes through the zone at a linear velocity of 32 to 80 feet/sec., passing the effluent from the primary reaction zone through a secondary reaction zone at a linear velocity less than that in the primary reaction zone and recovering the chlorinated product from the secondary reaction zone.
